Currently the final design for Phase I is being completed. Phase I includes sewer, water, and above grade infrastructure being completed on both Detroit Street and Main Street extending from the square to the River. The project will go to bid summer 2019 with an estimated fall construction start.

As of May 2019, Kenton has had great success at securing funding for the Downtown Capital Improvement Project Phase I with the assistance of OHM Advisors. In 2018 the City received a $500,000 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission for the project. The City also received a loan from the EPA through the WSRL and WSRLA loan funds. The EPA is also awarding the City total principle forgiveness from these loans. So as of May 2019, the City with the guidance of OHM, was able to fund the entire project without the requirement of any significant local investment. Both the principle forgiveness and OPWC funding have no obligation to pay back.
